In Case You Didn't Know...

...Texas is REALLY big. It's 773 miles wide and 790 miles from north to south. And it will soon be the largest state in America as soon as Alaska melts from global warming.

Nothing like a 6 hour/375 mile drive to the middle of nowhere to clear your head. The speed limit is 80 miles mph, and my car gets about 15 miles to the gallon, so the needle on my gas gauge moves about as fast as the minute hand on my watch.

I love the drive though, as well as the sites you see in small Texas towns with names like Junction, Ozona, Sonora and Ft. Stockton.

Song of Solomon

How beautiful are thy feet with shoes, O prince's daughter!
The joints of thy thighs are like jewels,
The work of the hands of a cunning workman.
Thy navel is like a round goblet,
Which wanteth not liquor:
Thy belly is like an heap of wheat set about with lilies.
Thy two breasts are like two young roes that are twins.
Thy neck is as a tower of ivory;
Thine eyes like the fishpools in Heshbon,
By the gate of Bathrabbim:
Thy nose is as the tower of Lebanon
Which looketh toward Damascus.
Thine head upon thee is like Carmel,
And the hair of thine head like purple;
The king is held in the galleries.
How fair and how pleasant art thou,
O love, for delights!
This thy stature is like to a palm tree,
And thy breasts to clusters of grapes.
I said, I will go up to the palm tree,
I will take hold of the boughs thereof:
Now also thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine,
And the smell of thy nose like apples.

Pot Luck

These folks were here for a potluck the other night when the air conditioning
was kaput, and were kind enough to let me make their portraits in my sweltering
studio.  Click on each person's name to find out more about them:

I Like Ike

When I was born, Dwight Eisenhower was president of the United States.

Born in 1890, he was the first president who could claim Texas as his birthplace.  Last Saturday night, 118 years later, a similarly auspicious event occured in Texas...I went on yet another first date.

I knew she was younger than I, but wasn't sure how much younger, until the following exchange took place:
She:  How old are you anyway?
Me:  I'm in my 40's
She:  Well I'm 32...that's only 8 years away from 40.
Me:  Great!  I'm only 9 years away from 40!
She:  What year did you graduate from high school?
Me:  1977
She:  I was 2

Incidentally,  she'd never heard of James Taylor or Earth, Wind and Fire.  And she kept talking about "the inner net".  Until now, I never really thought the lining of your bathing suit was much of a topic for conversation.  I wonder what Ike would say.
